چکیده

In 1931 Dirac [1] introduced a magnetic monopole into the quantum mechanics and found a quantization relation between an electric charge e and magnetic charge q, 2μ = n, n ∈ Z, where μ = eq, and ~ = c = 1. One of the widely accepted proofs of the Dirac selection rule is based on group representation theory (see, for example, [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]). In the presence of the magnetic monopole the operator of the total angular momentum J, which uncludes contribution of the electromagnetic field, obeys the standard commutation relations of the Lie algebra of the rotation group

Smooth Loops and Fiber Bundles: Theory of Principal Q-bundles

During the last few decades, nonassociative structures have been employed in various fields of modern physics. Among others, one may mention the rise of nonassociative objects such as 3-cocycles, which are linked with violations of the Jacobi identity in anomalous quantum field theory, and quantum mechanics with the Dirac monopole, the appearance of Lie groupoids and algebroids in the context o...

On Dirac’s incomplete analysis of gauge transformations

Dirac’s approach to gauge symmetries is discussed. We follow closely the steps that led him from his conjecture concerning the generators of gauge transformations at a given time —to be contrasted with the common view of gauge transformations as maps from solutions of the equations of motion into other solutions— to his decision to artificially modify the dynamics, substituting the extended Ham...

Confinement-deconfinement Order Parameter and Dirac’s Quantization Condition

We describe a monopole-like order parameter for the confinement-deconfinement transition in gauge theories where dynamical charges and monopoles coexist. It has been recently proposed in a collaboration with J. Fröhlich. It avoids an inconsistency in the treatment of small scales present in earlier definitions of monopole fields by respecting Dirac’s quantization condition for electromagnetic f...

Tetrad Gravity and Dirac’s Observables

In a recent series of papers [1] the canonical reduction of a new formulation of tetrad gravity to a canonical basis of Dirac’s observables in the 3-orthogonal gauge in the framework of Dirac-Bergmann theory of constraints[2] was studied. This concludes the preliminary work in the research program aiming to give a unified description of the four interactions in terms of Dirac’s observables. See...

Global Quantization of Vacuum Angle and Magnetic Monopoles as a New Solution to the Strong Cp Problem

The non-perturbative solution to the strong CP problem with magnetic monopoles as originally proposed by the author is described. It is shown that the gauge orbit space with gauge potentials and gauge tranformations restricted on the space boundary and the globally well-defined gauge subgroup in gauge theories with a θ term has a monopole structure if there is a magnetic monopole in the ordinar...
